First of all, thank you to all the parents who came to back to school night! It was nice to meet all of you!
As for the material this week, the bulk of the notes and work focused on "combining like terms." This is a concept that is VERY important as we progress through the course, so please ask questions if you have any!
Today (a minimum day!) will be a brief review of the week's topics followed by Quiz #3. There is no homework this weekend, unless you want to get started on next week's material....

Friday's HW
For those of you that weren't here on FRIDAY, here is the hw given that was due MONDAY.
p. 42-45 # 2 - 38 EVENS ONLY.
p. 42-45 # 2 - 38 EVENS ONLY.
Monday (9/22)
Today's Agenda:
A quick warm up and homework check will start our day, followed by notes on section 2.1 of the book.
This section goes over "translating" word problems into mathematical expressions. The notes are taken nearly verbatim (word for word) from the text, so any absent students can review the book for more information.
Tonight's homework: p.55-56 #'s 13-22, 25-34

Hints for Tomorrow's Quiz
- Sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.7 and 1.8 will all be covered on the quiz.
- Be very careful to look at the units of measurement (i.e. thousands, inches, etc.).
- Take your time and CHECK ALL OF YOUR WORK
- Remember that an exponent simply tells you the number of times that the base will be a factor.
- Good luck!!!

Agenda and Homework (9/19)
Good Morning!!
Today we will be taking Quiz 2 and colleting homework packets for the week.
The homework for the weekend (sorry guys!) will be a review of the material we have gone over thus far:
p. 42-45 #2-38 EVENS ONLY
Have a good weekend and be sure to watch my Bruins beat down Arizona on Saturday!

Agenda and HW (9/18)
Good Morning!
Today in class, we will be doing a quick warm up and hw check.
After that, the students will be working in groups to create mini-lessons for all of the material on tomorrow's quiz.
The homework consists of a quiz review worksheet!
If you are absent or miss class, please see me for the worksheet!

Notes from 9/16
Since a few of you were absent for a school-related field trip, I am going to go ahead and post the notes from yesterday (9/16)
...
The Commutative and Associative Properties (1.7)
...
The commutative property of addition states: in a sum, you can add terms in any order.
a + b = b + a
6 + 7 = 7 + 6
...
The commutative property of multiplication states: in a product, you can multiply factors in any orer.
ab = ba
6 x 7 = 7 x 6
...
The associative property of addition states: changing the grouping of terms will not change the sum.
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
(9 + 5) + 6 = 9 + (5 + 6)
...
The associative property of multiplication states: changing the grouping of factors will not change the product.
(ab)c = a(bc)
(5 x 7) x 6 = 5 x (7 x 6)
...
Things to remember:
- an equation can show both the associative and commutative properties
- when the numbers SWITCH THEIR ORDER, the commutative property is usually at work
- when the numbers INSIDE THE PARANTHESES CHANGE, the associative property is usually at work
- these properties only work for ADDITION and MULTIPLICATION, and only when these are the only operations being used
...
Any questions can be emailed to me at adam.yassaman@lausd.net
Good luck!
